Women's Rights in Islam
1. Right to Life and Dignity
Before Islam, female infants were sometimes buried alive. Islam strictly prohibited this practice.
→ "And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked for what sin she was killed." (Qur’an, At-Takwir, 81:8–9)
2. Right to Education
Islam commands both men and women to seek knowledge.
→ "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim, male and female." (Hadith)
3. Right to Property and Wealth
Women have the right to inherit, own property, and engage in trade.
→ "For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned." (Qur’an, An-Nisa, 4:32)
4. Right to Consent in Marriage
A woman’s consent is essential for a valid marriage. Forced marriage is invalid.
→ "A previously married woman has more right to her person than her guardian, and a virgin should also be consulted about herself..." (Hadith)
5. Right to Divorce
Women have the right to seek divorce under specific conditions (e.g., khula or judicial divorce).
6. Equality and Justice
Women are spiritually and morally equal to men. Superiority is only through piety.
→ "The most honored of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you." (Qur’an, Al-Hujurat, 49:13)
7. Motherhood and Family Status
Mothers hold a highly respected position in Islam.
→ "Paradise lies under the feet of mothers." (Hadith)
8. Participation in Social and Public Life
Throughout Islamic history, women have served as educators, merchants, poets, warriors, and advisors. For example, Aisha (RA) taught many companions.
According to Islamic sources, women are recognized as full individuals with rights and responsibilities. However, cultural practices throughout history have sometimes overshadowed the true message of Islam regarding women.
